ARTIST INTRODUCTION

      I am a returning Grade Twelve student at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School. I have been apart of the Communication Technologies classes for three years as well as an art class throughout my high school career. This allowed me to be classified as a graduating artist. Technology and art is my passion, so blending them together through this course has been an inspiration to me. The class has allowed me to have the best of both worlds as well as improving my skills.

     Even though these are my passions, when I move onto post secondary will be in a different direction. After high school, I plan to attend a university of my choice to pursue a career in teaching. This will allow me to pursue my other interest, the sciences. I want to become a high school biology teacher, and hopefully have some tech background as well. I hope to even incorporate the skills I have learned from my tech courses into my teaching style.

   I believe that I am a hard working individual, yet I can't give all the credit for my success souly on myself. I needed the inspiration and guidance to continue and believe in my dreams. A major thanks in the tech field would have to go towards my teacher, Mr. Esford for keeping me motivated!

   

VIDEO

GRADE NINE DOCUMENTARY

The Grade Twelve Communications Technology I have been apart of has created a video to introduce Grade Eight students to high school life. For this project, I was in charge (producer) of the content as well as working on the audio associated with it. For this project, we interviewed several grade nines and asked them multiple questions about their current high school experience and future plans. For our group, we were in charge of presenting their future plans.

The equipment I used for this video includes a Panasonic PVC camera with a boom microphone and audio equipment. The software used to edit this video includes, Final Cut Pro 7 to edit the audio levels along with the video, as well as Soundtrack Pro to incorporate background music into the video. This video will be sent across to all the feeder elementary schools to show how Holy Cross and high school is a new and exciting experience.


CHRISTMAS MASS

This video is documentation of the highlights from our yearly Christmas Mass that we celebrate as a school community. I was responsible for both recording (with the help of Mikayla Macdonald) and editing the footage to be viewed. When recording this event I had to face some difficulties. At the points while the standing (since I was at the back of the gym) it was difficult to capture events at the front of gym even with the tripod almost fully extended and camera almost out of my reach, yet the shots were successfully captured and worked in my favour. Another obstacle I had to face was students around me both sitting and standing. Excess audio can be captured by voices around and interfering with certain shots (ie. recording the choir) yet excess noise was able to be avoided.

This event was documented using a Canon Vixia HFS100 HD camera with a 6.4 -64mm 1:1.8 lens as well as a standard tripod fully elevated. The video was edited on an iMac computer with Final Cut Pro 7 utilizing the choir music through out the whole video while overlaying multiple shots of the whole mass. This video was presented on the Holy Cross website (hctoday.ca) to show the school community and household the event if they were unable to attend. 


THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE

This video is documentation of our school's Thanksgiving Food Drive held in the fall. I was instructed to both video and photograph this event for a Grade Twelve Communications Tech project as well as for school archive purposes. Each year Holy Cross, along with other high schools, holds a food drive to help the less fortunate in Kingston over Thanksgiving. As a school community, each home room donates non perishable food items as well as money to feed the hungry and give them a wonderful Thanksgiving. Through this event, I was able to document all the food our school had donated, as well as the school community (student council and CICS) loading the donation truck.

The equipment used to film this even include a Canon Vixia HFS100 HD camera with a 6.4 -64mm 1:1.8 lens. To capture this event whole event into highlights for a minute and a half video, I used Final Cut Pro 7 on an iMac computer. I also utilized Soundtrack Pro to incorporate a happy upbeat background sound to capture the feeling of the event. This video was to be used on the Holy Cross site to show the events going on during the fall, but now will be used for archive purposes. 



PSA - WATER

This PSA was a Grade Eleven Communications Technology Audio/Video project to make aware the use of water and how we need to conserve it. This video concept was based the whole idea of conservation of water with a horror film mixture. My partner and I decided that we wanted to bring the idea across using a scary feel as well as showing everything a normal person would do on a daily basis that would involve water loss. 

There are multiple pieces of videography that was used to film this production. A Canon Vixia HFS100 HD camera with a 6.4 -64mm 1:1.8 lens as well as mic kits were used to capture crisp clear sound for the parts in the video with talking. Some lights were also used as reflectors to allow a more eerie feel. This video was edited using Final Cut Pro 7 while incorporating techniques from our Grade Ten class. Using only five frames of a video pieces and placing them side by side allowed us to bring to life the water bottles through stop motion. Soundtrack Pro was also used to add in sound effects as well as some audio. This video was used for contest purposes as well as developing all of the skills we had obtained over the semester.

STOP MOTION PRODUCTION

This stop motion video was a Grade Ten Communications Technology project that was filmed in Room 218. For this task, as a group we must take an idea of choice and incorporate the method of stop motion while telling a story. My group chose to do a story about a bird, but in a unique and artistic way. Instead of using our own bodies, we decided to use skittles and other candies to portray our scenes. The story portrays a bird that is looking for his soul mate. He travels across the ocean, through the cities and through different seasons to finally reach his true love at the other side. 

This video took a lot of work and steps to accomplish. We used a Canon Vixia HFS100 HD camera with a 6.4 -64mm 1:1.8 lens elevated on a tripod as well as two Camray portable lighting systems to clearly show the story. In the group, my role for the video was audio production. Therefore, I used Soundtrack Pro to create calming background music to portray the story as well as sound effects to add to its depth. Collectively, the whole video was edited on Final Cut Pro 7 where each still shot we took was cut into five frames each to give the stop motion effect. From all the hard work we put into this video, it was incorporated into the Genesis (Art) Awards video that year to open the ceremony.

INTRODUCTION VIDEO

As a introductory project to the program Motion, as well as producing a video, our Grade Twelve Communications Technology created Introduction Videos for the production we make. This intro video is for regular student productions (HCTV). For this introduction I used the program Motion with the Particle Emitters of: Sound Check, Analog Modulator and Fireworks 01 to create a technology feel. After finishing the visuals in the background, it is then exported and transferred into Final Cut Pro 7 to add text as well as the HCTV logo. This video was used to improve my skills in Motion as well to use in front of other projects.

WOODWORKING

"Woodworking Tech" Side Table Made By: Karlycia Payne

During my Grade Twelve year, I was able to take a Woodworking Technology class to broaden my horizons to not just Communications Technology. As a first project, we were to create a simple project such as a stool. Instead, I decided to make a side table that I would actually be able to use in my household. To create this project, I had to utilize the radial arm saw to cut down the pieces to specific lengths, the table saw to obtain certain widths, as well as the surface plainer to let the sides be parallel and smooth. After obtaining all the pieces to the sizes I wanted, I cut out the certain designs I wanted on the skirts (as shown at the front) and the legs. After finishing, the project is sanded down, waxed and then stained for protection and looks.

"Woodworking Tech" Night Stand Made by: Karlycia Payne

This was my final project for the year. I was to choose a piece of furniture that was a little more complex and could be used in my house hold. From this, I chose to make a night stand. Like the first project, I conducted the same process to obtain all of my pieces and avoided any knots on the outsides so no holes would be made in the project. Difference with this is the creation of drawers and a backing. With the drawers I had to take four pieces and make grooves in each of the ends so they could all fit together like puzzle pieces. This allows them to be screwed in together and glued giving the frame. For the bottom, thinner pieces of wood are used and nailed across (after making a groove around the bottom to fit the pieces). This same technique was used to make the back of the table.




SKETCHBOOK

"Penguin Mother's Love" by Karlycia Payne

This piece was inspired by a couple of movies which include Happy Feet as well as March of the Penguins. This photo shows a mother penguin feeding and caring for her baby. This type of sketch is slightly out of my comfort zone and it gave me some difficulty to obtain the look I desired in the end. This was drawn with a regular pencil and no extra colour was added since I felt it would take away from the picture. Overall, this is not one of my favourite sketches but many people do admire it amongst some of my other pieces of art.

"Firefly Meteors" by Karlycia Payne

This photo was inspired by my fascination for nature and the Japanese culture (anime, kimonos etc). The sketch was originally drawn with a 0.7 lead pencil while utilizing the technique of shading and blending for the moon. The main objects I went back over a little darker in pencil to stand out in comparison to everything else. The colours were a mix of both pencil crayons as well as regular wax crayons to give a different texture to the photo. This sketch was the starting point for other anime photos I have drawn, where since then I have improved on. 

"Realistic Lil Wayne" by Karlycia Payne

This photo was originally a gift for a friend to capture his love for Lil Wayne and rap music through an artistic sketch form. The piece took several hours to complete since realistic drawings are not my strongest suit, as  well the small details (ie. tattoos on certain parts of the face). This was drawn using a normal 0.7 lead pencil to be able to accomplish the small details with some ease. For a human drawing, I am quite pleased with the way it turned out but I was unfortunately able to give my hard work away.

"Luke Graffiti" by Karlycia Payne

This piece of art was originally created for a friend but also was a learning experience for me to try a different type of art. I wasn't familiar with graffiti design yet was willing to try it out for the experience. The original design was sketched with an art pencil, and outlined later with permanent marker. From there, I outlined the inside of the lettering with red marker for the top as well as orange (giving the fire effect). From there, the inside outlines were coloured in with regular pencil crayons. To finish it off, I added the black backings to the letters to obtain a 3D effect. This piece to me is one of my favourites since it's so different from any other pieces of art I have created.

"Realistic Eye Ball" by Karlycia Payne

My artistic style is usually geared towards cartoons, anime or anything not realistic, yet I decided to branch off from the norm. If I was to draw a cartoon, the part that I enjoyed the most was the eyes. This part of the body can tell so much about a person as well as their feelings or expression. As a result, this intrigued me to try to draw a realistic human eye. This eye was drawn using a soft lead art pencil. The piece took a couple hours to accomplish due to its detail and size. Shading was incorporated to give the skin around the eye depth, as well as the iris and pupil. As a realistic piece, this ultimately is my favourite in its' own category.

"Blooming of Second Self" by Karlycia Payne

This graphic design piece was created as artistic as well as technological project with the theme of "The Secrets Within" as the basis. The model shots as well as one of the background layers was taken with a Nikon D5000 camera with an 18 - 55 mm, 3.5 lens. Two Camray 300 compact lighting systems (Aurora Lite Bank) with umbrella reflectors were utilized. This photo was modified on Adobe Photoshop version CS3. With this program the techniques of multiple layers, overlay text, black and white effect, as well as some special effects and filters were applied to reach the desired look. This piece was included in a public art show for Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School's play "The Secret Garden".

PERSONAL LOGO

"Personal Logo Design" by Karlycia Payne

This "personal" logo was created in room 218 for a project for Grade Twelve Communications Technology. This logo was produced on Adobe Illustrator CS3 by combining the techniques of the pen tool, as well as modifying anchor points to get allow the letters to combine together into one shape. This design will now be used as my signature on my website along with my work.

"Stradwick Carpet One" Newspaper Advertisement by Karlycia Payne

This newspaper advertisement was created for a Kingston Whig Standard contest to advertise companies in the Kingston area. The image was taken with a Nikon D5000 DSLR camera with a 18 - 55 mm, 3.5 lens. This design was created on Adobe Photoshop CS3 computer software, using static images and shapes to create the check marks to explain the products. The image was also brightened to let it stand out. This design was entered into the contest and was used to improve my graphic design skills.

 
MAGAZINE ADVERTISEMENT REPRODUCTION

"Maybelline" Magazine Ad Reproduction by Karlycia Payne

This magazine advertisement reproduction was created as a Grade Eleven graphic design project. The image was taken with a Nikon D5000 camera with an 18 - 55 mm, 3.5 lens. Two Camray 300 compact lighting systems (Aurora Lite Bank) with umbrella reflectors were utilized. For the macro images, an AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm 1:2.8 ED lens was utilized. The photos were put together on an iMac computer in Adobe Photoshop CS3 using multiple layers, outer glow on the text, as well as the line tool to obtain the multi coloured V shapes incorporated into the design. This photo was also used as a learning tool in graphic design and learning how to take macro shots.

During the fall, our Grade Twelve class took a trip to downtown Kingston to take pictures of all forms of Architecture, whether it be old, new, modern while also capturing patterns, texture and certain other themes. 
This photo was taken at Confederation Park in Kingston's downtown waterfront. This image was photographed with a Nikon D5000 DSLR camera with a 18 - 55 mm, 3.5 lens. This image was edited using Adobe Photoshop version CS3 and the photo was had the brightness and contrast increased in the program. This photograph was included in a public display and critiqued by Kingston This Week's, Rob Moy.

It was edited on Adobe Photoshop version CS3 with a black and white effect added and contrast and brightness changed. Thanksgiving Food Drive photography by Karlycia Payne

Every year our school participates in a Thanksgiving Food Drive to help out the community of Kingston who are less fortunate and can't have a Thanksgiving dinner like many of the rest of us.
This photography was taken outside of Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School at the ending of the Thanksgiving Food Drive. The image was taken using a Nikon D5000 DSLR with a 18 - 55 mm, 3.5 lens. This photo was edited using Adobe Photoshop version CS3 software. This photograph was taken to document the Thanksgiving Food Drive held at the school and will be used for archive purposes.

 

Advent Celebration Photography by Karlycia Payne

As a Catholic community, our school celebrates every week of Advent before the birth of Christ on Christmas day. This means we light a candle that symbolizes our faith (love, joy, hope and preparation) every week in the month of December. This photo was taken of Mr. Forester in Holy Cross' main foyer. The image was photographed using a Nikon D90 DSLR camera with an 80 - 200 mm, 2.8 lens. This photo was edited using Adobe Photoshop version CS3 computer software where I increased the brightness and saturation since the room was quite dark. This photo was published on the school's official website to present all of the winter events going on.
